Japanese Tea Garden
Best time to shoot: Early in the morning before the crowds or 2 hours before sunset.
Pro Tip: Use a wide-angle lens to capture the beauty of the entire area in your shots
The Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio, Tx is a hidden gem with lush greenery, koi ponds, and authentic Japanese architecture. Originally a quarry, the garden was transformed in the 1920s into a public space.
You can stroll through the winding paths lined with bamboo and cherry blossom trees, or relax by the waterfalls and bridges. The tea house offers traditional tea and snacks, completing the serene experience.
This is one of my favorite places to go for a walk/hike. Everything is so beautiful and meticulously taken care of.
McNay Art Museum
Best time to shoot: 2 hours before sunset
The McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Tx is a cultural gem with a stunning collection of modern and contemporary art. The museum is housed in a beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival mansion and features works by Picasso, Matisse, and O’Keeffe among others. The outdoor sculpture garden is perfect for any type of photo shoot. They also have beautiful iron doors as well as gorgeous fountains that add the perfect texture and color to your photos. This is definitely one of my favorite locations to shoot.
You don’t need a fancy camera to take great pictures at the McNay. Just set your phone to portrait mode and shoot away. You will definitely get some great shots.
Historic Market Square
Best time to shoot: Early in the morning before the crowds
Also known as el mercado, Historic Market Square is an excellent spot for all types of photography.
This was one of my favorite sessions ever. The first time I had a session here was just after quarantine and things were slowly starting to open up again. But people still weren’t venturing out much. We had the entire place to ourselves. It was awesome.
San Antonio Riverwalk
Best time to shoot: Anytime is perfect
Pro Tip: don’t stress about people in the background of your photos. It adds to the authenticity of the moment.
With its picturesque walkways, charming bridges, and colorful barges cruising along the river, the San Antonio Riverwalk is a great place for some of the best photos. The vibrant street life, festive lights, and scenic beauty make it one of the most instagrammable places.
Stone Bridges on the Riverwalk
Best time to shoot: Any time is great. for the best lighting have your subject face the sun. It won’t be direct light because you are below street level. This will provide an even lighting situation.
Pro tip: The stone bridges are one of the most popular spots for photos. You may have to be patient in order to get it all to yourself. But, your patience will pay off and you will be rewarded with great photos.
The stone bridges on the San Antonio Riverwalk offer a stunning photo opportunity with their intricate architecture and scenic backdrops. The reflection of the bridges on the river adds an extra element of beauty and charm to any picture.
For an added touch, try to get one of the brightly colored barges in the background.
The Alamo:
Best Time to shoot: Early morning is best if you want to avoid crowds.
If you have never seen the Alamo, you may be a little surprised to see that it is in the heart of downtown San Antonio.
With its famous facade and rich historical significance, it is a must-visit. I mean, if you don’t take pics in front of the Alamo, did you really even go to San Antonio?
The Historic Pearl
The Best time to shoot: 2 hours before sunset for the best lighting
The Historic Pearl is a great photo spot with its beautifully restored industrial buildings, trendy restaurants, and charming boutiques. The beautiful art installations and scenic river views offer endless opportunities for beautiful pictures.
The Pearl Farmer’s Market
The Best time to shoot: Get there as early as possible for the best lighting and to avoid the large crowds.
Pro tip: You want to start early because as the sun gets higher in the sky you will have harsher shadows and squinty eyes. If it gets too bright, look for heavily shaded areas.
With its colorful displays of fresh produce, artisan goods, and lively atmosphere, The Pearl Farmer’s Market is the perfect place for an impromptu photo shoot. The early morning lighting will add the perfect touch.
Hotel Emma
The Best time to shoot: 2 hours before sunset or early in the morning for the best lighting
The Hotel Emma is a great spot for pictures with its stunning blend of industrial and chic decor, vintage details, and artistic displays. Don’t miss the rooftop bar and elegant lobby. They offer great opportunities for unique photos.
Essex Modern City
Essex Modern City is a fun place for photos with its color murals, industrial architecture, and contemporary art installations. The trendy boutiques, cafes, and outdoor spaces offer unique backdrops for Instagram-worthy shots. This is a favorite spot among photographers and influencers.
Botanical Gardens

Brackenridge Park
Best time to shoot: The tall trees offer shade from the bright sun allowing you to shoot at any time of the day.
Pro tip: look for areas where the sunlight illuminates the leaves in the trees. Place your subject at least 10 feet in front of the leaves for an incredible backdrop. This is one of my favorite shots as a professional photographer.
Brackenridge Park offers several different locations for photos. Between the Japanese Tea Garden, the Sunken Garden Theater, and the San Antonio Zoo you could take enough great photos to fill your Instagram feed for a month.

Best time to shoot: You will want to get there early before it gets hot and the animals head for the shade

Best time to shoot: 2 hours before sunset for the best lighting. Be sure to check before you go to ensure they will be open.
Mission San Jose is a beautiful place to take pictures with its historic Spanish colonial architecture, ornate carvings, and beautiful courtyards. The UNESCO World Heritage site offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history.
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
Best time to shoot: as early as you can get there
Pro tip: You’ll want to go early when the animals are more active. They will often line the road waiting for food. As it gets later they aren’t as hungry and seek shelter from the hot Texas sun.
The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is a cool place to take pictures with its vast array of exotic animals roaming freely in a natural setting. You can drive through the park and capture up-close shots of zebras, giraffes, buffalo, and other animals in their natural habitats.
The Majestic Theater
Best time to shoot: in the morning for the best lighting and to avoid crowds.
Pro Tip: Take pictures from across the street in order to capture the entire theater as well as the marquee. Then head over to the theater for more detailed shots. The box office with its bright colors and texture, is one of my favorite spots to shoot.
